I'm using version 2.3. Is it possible to open .docx files with writer?
Thank
you for your assistance.
Nancy

Hello Nancy,

The short answer is: 'No'.
Microsoft invented the docx, xlsx and ppsx format in the hope that everyone
would pay for new updates of Word, Excel and Powerpoint... Ask your
correspondent to use the previous formats doc, xls, pps.

The present version of OpenOffice.org doesn't yet include the means to open
the new MS formats. There are some plug-ins (Novell) and other programs
around that do convert these files, but the regular OOo will only include
this option with version 3 later this year (September).

MS now has a file compatibility filter that will alow earlier Office suites to
read/write those pesky new formats. But, they do not advertise it. So
if you have access to an earlier version of MS Office, see it that helps.
I use it for my Office 2003, when I need access to the new formats. Most
of the time it is for the new templates from MS's web site. Then I convert
it to a OOo readable format. I really love their calendar templates. I have
their 1900-2078 calendar and their 2005-2014 calendar as well.

It will be great when OOo 3.x comes out and OOo will read the .docx and
the xltx formats, but there is few choices otherwise.

I have not tried this but I read on MS's site that if you download the Word 2007 viewer program you can view the program and do a copy/paste do get the document into OOo. Since I have Office 2003 with the filter, the viewers will not install on my
computer.

The sad part of the .docx format is that MS made a deal with the Library of Congress
to start using those new formats in saving LOC's documents and other files.
It did not work out when LOC started using Jpeg2000 format for the large
image files instead for the .sid format. Yet LOC is still using it and half of the image file documents will not load due to it is a bad file. I have the latest
Jpeg2000 filters installed. I just hope the powers that be iat LOC will not
have the same trouble with MS's files.
