Hi all,
I'm having a real problem getting my foot in the door learning OOo macros.
In WordPerfect I could write macros that would make you your morning tea
and then stir it for you but I can't get a handle of the OOo ones. Normally
I learn macros by: reading the manuals and trying out the sample macros,
playing around with them, modifying them and so on. My sources for
Openoffice are:
StarOffice 8 Programming Guide for Basic and Andrew's various contributions
to macros. (AndrewMacro.odt.pdf).
I can't get any of the example macros to work in OOo 2.3.1 running on Debian
Lenny 2.6.22 (kernel). I get a variety of errors which I can send the list,
if requested.
I also learn by recording macros from a sequence of commands via keystrokes,
studying the code and then adapting it to my needs. But when I look at the
code generated by recording a macro (say and search and replace command),
it's total gibberish and looks nothing like the example macros in the
manuals. I'm getting very frustrated since I don't want to do anything
really complicated. I want to take the contents of, say, cell A1, perform a
series of search+replace functions (one-many;many-one replacements so this
is not a simple mapping) and have the result appear in cell B1.

This shouldn't be very hard but I can't get anywhere close to finding out
how to do it. Can someone suggest a way I can learn this. I am not
interesting in doing any kind of fancy GUI stuff; just simple data
manipulation of the type described above.

Thanks for any insights.
Jonathan

Please do not send me copies of list mail. I read the lists. Thanks!
