If you purchase and download this program, is it still
possible to open other microsoft products with your
program? Meaning if someone sends me an email with a
microsoft word attachement, can I still open the
program with open office?

1) Do not ever pay to download OpenOffice. It is available, at no charge, from www.openoffice.org. Those vendors who charge for downloading are generally providing you with nothing that you can't obtain for free. There are some vendors who provide OpenOffice on a CD, for a nominal amount. They provide a useful service for those who cannot download OpenOffice.

2) To answer your question, yes, OpenOffice can read & write Microsoft Office files, including Word documents, other than those saved in the new Microsoft Office 2007 formats (.DOCX etc).
