It's normally automatic: there are separate images for text,
spreadsheets, presentation, drawing, database, html, master document,
formula, and templates. However, OS X uses a filetype image
corresponding to the suffix of the file, and if you didn't tick the
"Automatic Filename Extension", then the Finder won't know what image
to use.
