Are you saving in the standard OOo format?  That is, .odt file type.
If yes, then your recipients are unlikely to be able to open it if
they're using Micro$oft products.

When creating the files, rather than "Save" select "Save As..." and
change the file type to, for example, .doc and make sure that
"Automatic file name suffix" is checked.  Your recipients will now be
able to open the file.
