First, the kerning issues are resolved. I don't know what I did, but
the italic now appears on screen and prints using the font metrics
correctly.

However, there are still a couple of problems. First, I noticed just
this morning that the combining diacritical for the syllabic mark does
not work in italic. I can get around it just by setting that character
to regular, but then it is not slanted as an italic character would be.
Not a huge deal. I did not check the other combining diacriticals -
will do that later.

Another problem that I have had for some time is the beta (Unicode DF)
and the theta (3B8). There is no regular version. They appear italic
even when regular is applied. I have received an e-mail from Peter
Baker explaining the problem. These two characters are mapped in the
Greek page. And he designed Junicode to be for medievalists, so the
Greek letters are slanted, as they would be in old texts. He has been
aware of the problem for some time and is trying to figure out a
solution. Meantime, the only thing I can do is use a different font for
those characters. Unfortunately, the theta is required for English
transcriptions, and the beta is required for Spanish and German, three
languages that I work in a lot.
