Yes, you can have both OpenOffice and Microsoft Office installed on the same computer. One thing to watch for, is during the install, you'll be asked if you wish to make OpenOffice the default application for Microsoft Office files. This is your choice and you can change it later. You might also want to install the Sun ODF plugin, which will enable Microsoft Office to work with the ISO standard ODF files, that OpenOffice creates by default. If you do that, I'd recommend installing it first, and then OpenOffice. However, as always, OpenOffice can work with Microsoft Office files, other than the new Office 2007 formats (.DOCX etc.).

If you later wish to change the default application for opening the various file types, follow these directions:

Changing file associations

Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and choose the desired application.
