Which would be easier if makers would just publish the interface 
specs for the hardware - the data /must/ exist, and its publication 
would even save the makers writing the software.

I've tried that a couple of times. It'll run solitaire games - but 
nothing of any actual use that I'm interested in (like pegasus email 
client), at least not without an incredible amount of hassle. At 
least virtualbox is an i386 hardware emulator, so you really can 
(theoretically) run a full OS on it.
