I don't recognise "ooword". Do you mean the OpenOffice.org word processor, called Writer? Yes: it is very likely that the nature of the source of the text is indeed the cause of this; whether you consider it a problem depends on what you then wish to do with the text.
You are not exactly doing anything "wrong", but there is very probably an easy solution. Are you pasting the material into Writer? If so, instead of using normal Paste, use Edit | Paste Special... (or Ctrl+Shift+V) and then select "Unformatted text" from the available options. That way, just the text will be inserted, and it will inherit its style from the surrounding text.
