I agree that your answer represents the most likely explanation, I was just

I just installed 2.4.1 (Vista) on my son's girlfriends' computer, and in
the process I also updated here Java to 7. The Help files all work
correctly. I also tried the same on a Win2KPro machine using Java 7 and
that works correctly as well. It sounds as if the files in your OOo help
directory have become corrupted. You can try reinstalling 2.4.1 (you did
keep the download I hope :-)
