Your initial subscription sets infinite credit. The subsequent call to setFlowControl() adds credit. What is required is first to cancel the existing infinite credit (through a messageStop()).
It seems confusing to have a method call that doesn't appear to work...
I would agree its not intuitive. I suspect exposing that method was not considered carefully enough.
