What is different between those two cases? Is the broker the same and the same version in each case? Is the broker configured in the same way, using the same version of java? Are you running either broker or client on a different OS version in the two cases?
I would suggest trying to isolate the difference between what works and what does not to see if that gives clues as to what you need to change.
You could also see if comparing wireshark traces from the case that works with the case that doesn't sheds any light.
