Servicemix and Maven

1. When I run servicemix for the first time, is there is any requirement
that Maven build should have been completed prior atleast once?
2. If not, why is that features are not added to my instance by default.
Only when I run Maven build on some POM, I am able to see the features list
in servicemix.
3. What is the significance of the system folder under SERVICEMIX_HOME?
