Answering my own question in case anyone ever needs to know: yes, it is
possible. Copy the jackrabbit folder into the sling.home directory in
place of the one already there, make sure ownership is set correctly and
everything should be okay. Presumably this is only if versions of
various things are consistent.
Thanks for the suggestions in regard to the other issues I was having,
not sure what it was in the end but I strongly suspect a conflict
between some of the old information and the new install. Starting with a
fresh install and only copying the data folder across seems to have
bypassed the problems.
