CRXDR Lite with non-AEM servers?

A lot of the sling related docs I find are centered around using CRXDE Lite. Is 
there any way to use this with a sling launchpad build?

It doesn't like the base sling URL at the CRXDE login dialog, but perhaps I'm 
using the wrong URL.
