Most CRM systems offer ways to authenticate from a cental Active Directory or LDAP. I know SugarCRM offers LDAP auth even in the Community Edition. I think this is why the developers chose LDAP as the primary means of auth. As it's not a very popular auth method, SQL was probably provided for those who weren't going to be doing centralized auth and wanted a quick way of getting everything working.
