i think it could be possible to programmatically poll server via VBA script, I know it's a workaround but it's cheaper than an exchange server , and it doesn't need antivirus, software updates, reboots, licences and the other funny stuffs that come with windows servers.. i think something like this http://slipstick.com/developer/code-samples/monitor-secondary-mailbox-messages/ could work...
