They are used automatically by the "spamassassin" and "spamd" scripts, yes. They are not used automatically by software using Mail::SpamAssassin unless the software specifies the LOCAL_STATE_DIR parameter correctly when constructing a Mail::SpamAssassin object. Since that parameter is new and not mentioned in any documentation (AFAICS), and the path it is hardcoded to by the SpamAssassin isntall scripts is not avaiable in any standardized way, it is very probable that a bunch of software does not automatically use the updated rules. I think the beta of the next version of MIMEDefang do find the updates as long as the LOCAL_STATE_DIR is '/var/lib'.
