In fact, the fix for the above, on Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS at least, is simply to install the zlib1g-dev package: http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/libdevel/zlib1g-dev After which, SpamAssassin 3.2.0 builds and installs successfully using the cpan method.
