Do you mean junction points, which are more like hardlinks in Unix? Isn't it so, that they need to be on the same "drive" (filesystem)?

No, symlinks are different than sortcuts and they don't exist on XP.

But, I think you are mixing up "repository" and "working copy". Have you read the first two chapters of the FREE svn book?
