OK, this may just be down to the fact that it's the end of a very long day but...
does the renderBaseTag parameter of the Shell component actually work? see http://tapestry.apache.org/tapestry4.1/components/Shell.html I've tried setting it to false but it still keeps on rendering the <html> element at the top of the document.
