Nevertheless my next problem during the `mvn install` command is:

Maybe the example is not the best entry point to just "clone and run
it"-experience. I'll try it to set it up newly from ground level.

I double checked it and I'm running 1.8.
check your POM, i am running with JDK 1.8:
