So, wouldn't the answer really be Yes it will work (technically it is feasible), with several caveats, namely, multicast is typically not enabled on WANs, and the transmission protocol for replication is not secure. It boils down to a network problem - and if you had a secure VPN over WAN which would carry multicast, it work be technically feasible and as secure as your VPN.
