About 10 years ago, I inherited a project that was running on Tomcat 4.1.x and I too was petrified about upgrading. The kind folks on this list laughed at me until I finally made the 4.1 -> 5.5 -> 6.0 -> 7.0 migration. I probably could have saved myself a lot of trouble by just junking the original configuration and going all the way up to Tomcat 7, but I went ahead and did the slow migration path. I use our own internal release cycle to deploy updated versions of Tomcat. We have a roughly-quarterly release cycle, and so we upgrade Tomcat quite often. I have never had a testing-period go by where a Tomcat upgrade has broken anything.
