Thanks. I renamed my stand-alone context definition conf/[engine]/[host]/ROOT.xml and it worked. FYI...I've asked the developer list about the possibility of respecting the empty string path attribute value regardless of where the context is defined and/or update the documentation to capture this specific naming requirement for specifying the defining the host's default context (aka webapp).
