... right, but how does Tomcat know how to parse the file?Tomcat won't automatically process the PHP code, unless you do something complicated involving a CGI redirection, if I remember correctly.
Your seeing the Javascript ready state change, but you're not seeing the same happen on the server because it's probably not executing the PHP.
Try calling the url you're submitting to directly in a browser, and use view-source to see if Tomcat is actually executing the PHP, or if it's just returning the file as if it's HTML.
