IA64 is a RISC-like 64-bit architecture, developed by Intel with considerable input from HP. It's completely different than IA32, rather than being the extension of IA32 that AMD64 is. The IA64 designers pushed the pipeline performance issues onto the software code generators, meaning that you must have an extremely clever compiler (or JIT) in order to make it run at all well. There are a few vendors still making IA64-based systems, but they are steadily (and thankfully) dwindling. - Chuck THIS COMMUNICATION MAY CONTAIN CONFIDENTIAL AND/OR OTHERWISE PROPRIETARY MATERIAL and is thus for use only by the intended recipient.
