Looking at ObjectInputStream sourced, the OptionalDataException is
thrown when the source stream is truncated.
It might be related to the following issue, fixed in Tomcat 7, but
never proposed for backport yet:

that's what I thought, but the SessionMessage doesn't use ByteMessage
