Joe,

What you are saying may be true, but it defies logic. SI units are learned
in the early years, in grammar school. They should be well known before one
leaves secondary school. Thus, even the lowest social groups should be
fully knowledgeable of SI.

It may have a lot to do with the calliper of people who attend university.
During their early years, they paid attention in school and absorbed more
than their classmates from the lower classes of people. They studied
harder. The only exception are those who are rich enough to have daddy pay
for everything. Being better educated from the beginning, they are more
able to adjust to the change to metric. Those at the lower end of the
social ladder are not able to adjust to change and stick religiously to
familiar practices, even if they are not well versed in those practices
either.

John

Keiner ist hoffnungsloser versklavt als derjenige, der irrtümlich glaubt
frei zu sein.

There are none more hopelessly enslaved then those who falsely believe they
are free!
