Dear Highsmith Customer Representative,

I have looked at the listings for the laser pointers in your catalog and
one in particular intrigues me. The one I refer to is your High
Intensity Pointer, V2B-28574.

The description in your catalog indicates that this pointer operates at
"five megawatts of power", a truly amazing feat for a hand held device!
Further, you describe it as a lightweight device that operates on two C
batteries.

The military would be interested in this device but surely you know that
its use by civilians would be illegal. Civilians are generally limited
to laser pointers that operate around five milliwatts or less. Even 5 mW
pointers can cause eye damage; 5 MW pointers would probably vaporize an
eye and, I imagine, immediately kill the person illuminated by it.

I suggest, with less tongue in cheek, that you might wish to take care
in using SI ("modern metric") units, prefixes, and their symbols. Your
other pointers are typically described as being 5 MW pointers (5 000 000
watts) but you should have described them as 5 mW pointers (0.005
watts). Whether the prefix is an uppercase M or a lowercase m has a
tremendous impact; here the wrong prefix symbol has obviously confused
even your own copywriter. Would you care if I made a 9 decimal place
error when paying one of your bills?

If you need some help in proper use of the modern metric system in your
catalog, please let me know. Your catalog would certainly benefit in
today's marketplace by increasing your use of metric units -- if
properly done!

regards,
James R. Frysinger
