Subject: Metric Labeling
Ms. Lisa Schroeter, Director
US-TABD Office
Dear Ms. Schroeter:
The TABD news release of 1999 Dec 17 quotes Jeanette Wagner,
speaking on behalf of the TABD's metric labeling issue group, as noting
"... recent progress in the U.S. to allow metric only as an option, ..."
I assume that Ms. Wagner is referring to the fact that both the
TABD and also the NCWM have publically declared support for an amendment
to the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA) to *permit* metric-only
labeling of consumer commodities offered for sale in the United States.
What steps has the TABD taken since 1999 to assure that the FPLA
is, in fact, amended to *permit* metric-only labeling in the U.S., before
the 2009 deadline set by the European Union?
What is the status of draft bills in the House and Senate
to amend the FPLA to allow metric-only labeling?
Sincerely,
Eugene A. Mechtly, College of Engineering
