I found some more information on the units used in Russia before 1920. We can 
be glad that they do not use the verst anymore, because these units, adopted 
under Peter the Great, were part of the British ifp family.
The foot and the inch (fut and djujm), were exactly equal to their British 
counterparts.
The sagene, (fathom) was 7 English feet. The verst was 500 sagenes, 500*7=3500 
English feet. We have escaped from a war on two fronts, thanks to Russian 
metrication, the 'Evil Communist Plot'! Russian being a member of the metric 
family has proven to be crucial.
