Hi John

I also read with interest the Korea's new law in
Metric Today.

When a small country like Korea (625 billion $ GDP)
can enforce such rule, definitely a large country
like China (4.9 trillion $ GDP) can also enforce the
rule.

I think the Chinese use yyyy-mm-dd format in date and
this is very important particularly in the expiry date
for food and medicines.

Sadly China is a Communist country. One happy thing to
note is that they do have freedom of press & religion.
Let us hope that they move slowly towards democracy.

I received my Jul-Aug copy of USMA toady and found the cover article very
interesting.

The article is titled: KOREAN STANDARDS & TESTING GROUP REPRESENTATIVE
VISITS USMA.

I am not going to copy the whole article here, but their is something very
interesting to report:

...the Korean government revised it measurement law to mandate that
measurements be expressed in SI units after 1 July 2001. Violation of this
law could result in a JAIL (emphasis is mine) sentence or a substantial
fine. The law covers both mandating the production of goods in SI units and
also requires the importing of goods that are manufactured to SI units.

Later:

According to (Byung-Soo) Youn, the newly revised Korean LAW ON METROLOGY
(Italics) targets manufacturers and importers who may be fined up to $4000
or a YEAR'S PRISON TERM (emphasis is mine) for using non-SI units after the
set date of 1 July 2001.

Now, if only every country would have a law with that type of bite in it.
Just think how many American companies or companies from other countries
still manufacturing in non-SI, will not be able to sell goods in Korea.
Korea needs to push this concept Asia wide.

I wonder if this law will help force the US to do something to convert or
become mad at Korea.

John
