I would say that Trystan is his first name and Mordrel the family name.  And
of course, Trystan is male.  There is a Wagner Opera called Tristan und
Isolde (http://www.metopera.org/synopses/tristan.html).  I think Trystan is
a variation on Tristan.  I know that Tristan is male and Isolde is female.
