I suspect for a number of people here, this is one of just a very small set of discussion lists, and they are in particular not familiar with the USENET newsgroups discussion system, where there are discussion groups such as soc.culture.usa and soc.culture.europe dedicated to a large number of the off-topic postings here. If you are not familiar with the USENET discussion system, you can have a quick look at it on groups.google.com, which is a popular archiving web interface to it, but the better way to use USENET groups is to install your own newsreader software on your PC and configure it to connect to the news server of your local internet service provider. This gives better performance and the newsreader will memorize which articles you have already seen before. A fairly good freely available newsreader is built into the Mozilla web browser for example, but there are dozens of others. Apropos newsgroups: The 21 day discussion period for the new group proposal misc.metric-system has ended today, a vote taker has been assigned, and he will post the Call For Vote message in the next few days to news.announce.newgroups. I will forward it here when that has happened. You can then vote in favour or against the creation of a dedicated worldwide USENET discussion group on SI and metrication, which I hope you will all do. You can follow the proceedings in the daily posted UVV CFV status report in news.groups. Markus -- Markus G.
