>If the Minister for Transport really wants to cut carnage on Irish roads, he

>McDonald, Environment Editor

This confirms my worst fears. Frank McDonald is a virulent anti-motorist
bigot, and regularly supports any form of regulation that causes disruption
for the private motorist (where else in the world would you have 24 hour bus
lanes when we don't have 24 hour buses). One of his articles was entitled
"Time to Turn off the Motor Car", conveniently forgetting that if even a large
fraction of our motorists attempted to use what must be one of the worst
public transport systems in Europe (which even by American standards is
abysmal), it would simply grind to a halt. Of course, Frank McDonald doesn't
have any children that need to be ferried around to football, music or any
other extra-school activities. It is also easy to extol the virtues of the bus
and the evils of the car when one lives in a trendy apartment downtown and
works 300 m away in the Irish Times.

The anti-motorist agenda has thoroughly infiltrated local government in Dublin
(which is completely undemocratic, as the unelected County Managers have all
the power), and it looks like the metrication changeover will be used as
another opportunity to bash the motorist, which will probably generate the
first real anti-metric sentiment in this country.
