Dear Joe, Mike, and All,

Before metrication Australia used a ton of 2240 pounds consisting of 20
hundredweight of 112 pounds. These units were used widely in agriculture for
such things as fertiliser and grain.

However, the change to the simpler tonnes of 1000 kilograms was made quickly
and smoothly in the 1970s.

I worked for a time in the fertiliser industry and the only time I saw tons
of 2000 lb was when we imported specialist fertilisers directly from the
USA.

Cheers,
