I think it was Simon Stevin (1548/1620) who performed the experiment that
refuted Aristotle's views on gravity and falling bodies. Simon Stevin
reported this before 1584. As I understand it, Galilei Galileo did his
gravitation experiments 'independently and some time later'.

This was the same Simon Stevin who wrote simple descriptions of decimal
numbers and decimal calculations in 'De Thiende' (literally 'Of Tenths') in
1585.
