A great way to promote metrication is to use the term "liters" a lot in conversation.  Everyday use requires people to speak of quantities of liquids quite often, and usually folks use "quarts" (i.e., "...we'll need a quart of well water to test for hardness....").   I always use liters (e.g, "So if I bring in a liter of well water, when can you have the results for me?")

I have never had bad feedback with this.  Everyone seems to know how much a liter is, probably from dealing with soda pop.
