Dear Helen, Do you know a work called 'Influence: Science and Practice' by Robert B Cialdini.
It seems to me that what he has to say may be interesting to those of us who have an interest in the metrication process (as well as in the metric system itself). Cialdini's Chapter 3: 'Commitment and Consistency' and Chapter 4: 'Social Proof' seem particularly apposite to an understanding of why groups who spend their working life with metric units then discuss the heights of football players and the distance they travelled on the weekend in feet and miles. There are reviews of 'Influence: Science and Practice' at: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0688128165/102-6221486-9789745 ?v=glance I have just read the Fourth Edition (2001 Allyn & Bacon), but I had read one of the earlier editions years ago in the early 1990s, I think but I had not really considered how Cialdini might be able to guide the path to metrication.
