I think I heard that in some places they've tried 3 L milk containers. Since they needed a new container anyway (since litres are bigger than quarts) they tried the 3 L container instead of the 4 L container that would have been closer to the old gallon. I think they did that because many people found the old gallon (and a similar sized 4 L container) to be too big and awkward to handle. The 3 L container seemed to be much easier to pour from.

I'm drawing this from memory so I'm not sure how accurate it is. Does anyone else recall this? I think it was discussed on this list.
