I don't find one square foot to be nearly enough room for an adult human being to stand in. I can't get my feet into a one square foot square unless I stand with feet together ("at attention"), which is not very comfortable. That's not to mention the awkwardness of having one's nose in the next person's ear. I'd surely hate to be one of those thousand people in a 1000 sq. ft. room.

One square metre is a much more comfortable space which allows for a comfortable stance (feet slightly apart) and gives room to move one's arms, cross one's arms, etc. with comfort, and a little breathing space. I think I'd rather estimate floor space and standing room in square metres. To me, that's a better "mind visual" than people crammed into a space so small that one is shoulder to shoulder or nose into ear.
