        Several weeks ago I bought a digital tympanic thermometer (stick it in 
your 
ear, fella!) for home use. It's a Braun ThermoScan and it can be set to read 
in Celsius. I got it at Sam's Club for just under $25, as I recall.

        Preferences vary. I like the tympanic thermometers because they are 
fast (a 
second or two) and they provide a means of testing for "hot ear" caused by 
ear infections. (Measure the temperature of both ears and compare.) The 
devices use a disposable plastic cover that one changes easily between 
patients. In fact, the device alerts the user if a new cover has not been put 
on, but does allow the same cover to be used for each ear if desired.
