The examples I showed, and which you are not denying, is that you are
actively involved in aiding and abetting a group of unashamed anti-metrics
who are prepared to interfere with metric signs in the UK.
Although I have softened over the years I am still conistant in my view. I
prefer as much information as possible - that is - both imperial and metric.
However, when safety is compromised with the use of dual units then I
think one set of units should be used. This means a consistent use of
imperial on roads to reflect the instrumentation of vehicles and how people
"talk and see things" - although for width and height restriction I can see
a benefit in showing both.
Pricing apples by the lb as well as the kg harms noone so here I belief
choice should exist.
Medicine is an area that I would apply a safety argument and suggest that
only metric be used.
That group (Active Resistance to Metrication or ARM as they call
themselves) interferes with signs where they can (either by direct action
or the threat of it) whether they are legal or not. For example they
recently removed a perfectly legal maximum height warning sign over a
bridge in Lincolnshire.
If this is to do with the removal of a secondary metric height restriction
then I don't think that helps their cause. Interestingly you do not post the
link to that discussion. Probably because it shows me disagreeing with ARM
and that wouldn't be helpful in the circumstances.
In case you hadn't noticed there has been plenty of healthy pro-metric
debate e.g. the "millimetres" thread.
I have noticed that. The same happens on the pro-imp side.
However - Allow me to put this into contect - There is a show on BBC1 on a
thursday night called question time (www.bbc.co.uk/questiontime)
How boring would that show be if the panel only consisted of politicians
from one party who had slightly different opinions from one another?
I've not seen that. Perhaps they would like to tell me now - privately or
in public I don't mind which - I promise won't bite.
Naturally those emails are private - and that's how they will remain. I'm
sure you understand.
Besides you, I have had my share of differing views from others. Of course
I don't mind it. All I ask is that it be honest.
We are both in agreement there then.
Are you telling us that you are here to help the metrication campaigners
stengthen their cause? Such sycophantic pretentions do you no good either.
That's correct - it wouldn't do me any good. If that's what I was after.
But simply hiding from the views of those who have differing opinions to
yourself doesn't strengthen ones cause either.
I've intently listened to many views from lots of pro-mets on various sites.
They have helped my opinion formation - because without listening to those
views my own views would become quite sterile.
Let me get this clear - I AM NOT ANTI-METRIC!
If you like - I'm anti-anti-imperial! (if you get my drift).
Believe it or not I see benefits in their being a metric system.
I also see good in the imperial system.
There are pros and cons in both (IMHO) but if I'm left to choose which
system I like for a particular task then I am happy. If the state, or
individuals, tell me I am wrong then I will become unhappy. Its as simple
as that.
BTW - where you the chap that cited the idea that I was trying to pitch
pro-metrics against each other?
Nice try but it doubt it will wash.
What I have said is the truth. Phrases like "extreme gets things done"
hardly acts as a magnet to any cause.
I wrote a cheque to the BWMA to become a member of their group.
The only reason I did this was the extreme posts I was reading at that time.
I'll let others decide whether I'm an "extremist".
I did not say you were. Just that I happen to know that you are being fed
information about *ME* from an extremist who has made several personal
attacks on me and my wife.
I am not party to what he is saying about me - but don't you think it might
be somewhat "coloured"?
But if I'm not wanted I only have to be told so and I'll leave, I don't
need to be banned.
Again I am not suggesting that - but you appear to be hinting that my views
should not be heard.
And whilst I am a guest on a *pro-metric* website with views that might be
(healthily) *contrary* to the main aim of this website - I feel somewhat
threatened that your consistant complaint about me might see my views get
censored * DESPITE * messages of support for bringing another angle of
argument to debates.
If you started posting to the BWMA forums I would NEVER ask that you be
censored, banned or ignored - so long as your intent was non-offensive.
I hope I have made my opinion clear.
*Again*
