If Americans are so afraid of foreign units, then why refer to their own
feet, inches, etc., as English units. Why would Americans who love these
measures refer to them by a foreign nationality?
And don't forget that the ifp etc. all came from foreign countries, such
as ancient Babylon, ancient Rome and France. US customary units are just
slightly altered foreign units, whereas metric units are international
(hence the name SI) and not specific to just one country.

Finally, the object of this group is to promote the greater use of
metric worldwide, particularly in the US. One of the main obstacles is
the perception that metric is something 'foreign' being pushed on them.
Trying to push British or French spelling conventions on metric units
will simply reinforce this perception, and make metric conversion
harder.
