I don't wish to labour the point but we have to be clear about the context of the discussion. You are of course right that for simple everyday applications of measurement 40 micrometre is neither here no there, but I thought we were discussing the topic in terms of pure metrology and how these units are defined. In that context these tiny differences become significant.
At a purely scientific level I totally agree. But at a purely scientific level I'd always choose metric.
