Last week, I read this letter in the Irish Times. Old habits die hard. Someone who likes to do nasty calculations, it seems.

55 000 * 14 feet and then convert the result to miles.

Suppose you have 55 000 cars, allowing  4.2 m per car?

You can multipy 55 by 4.2 to get the kilometres - 231 km!

BTW: I am going to Ireland for a week, from coming Saturday to Sunday February 26.

 

Madam, - Some 55,000 new cars were sold in the Republic in January 2006. If you were to park them all in a row (allowing 14 feet for each), the line would stretch for 146 miles. Now I wonder why traffic congestion seems to be getting worse. . . - Yours, etc,
