"The original study had made estimates for England only. As the whole UK would be affected by conversion, the estimates were factored in proportion to the additional urban roads in the other countries, to reflect the fact that most signs are likely to be in urban areas. Overall, around ½ million signs could be affected."
If that 0.5 million figure is correct, then they are stating that it will cost well over £1000 to change every sign. Are they seriously saying it will cost over £1000 to repaint or change a sign? It's a little hard to swallow, isn't it? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephen Humphreys" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "U.S. Metric Association" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 27, 2006 7:46 PM Subject: [USMA:36152] RE: Fw:BBC E-mail: Call for metric road sign switch > Then try this one out. > Not a newspaper > The ministry of Transport: > > http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_roads/documents/page/dft_roads_611241.hcsp > > > >From: "Stephen Davis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > >Reply-To: "Stephen Davis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > >To: "U.S. Metric Association" <[email protected]> > >Subject: [USMA:36149] RE: Fw:BBC E-mail: Call for metric road sign switch > >Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 19:03:22 -0000 > > > >Many of them probably would if they believe the rubbish that appeared in > >one newspaper that claimed metrication of the roads would cost £700 > >million. > > > >Yeah, sure! > > > >----- Original Message ----- > >From: "Stephen Humphreys" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > >To: "U.S. Metric Association" <[email protected]> > >Sent: Friday, February 24, 2006 9:07 AM > >Subject: [USMA:36107] RE: Fw:BBC E-mail: Call for metric road sign switch > > > > > > > Regardless of "which side of the fence one is on" this newsitem rather > > > backfired in the UK. > > > When the general public were questioned about it there was an almost > > > consistent hostile reaction. > > > It actually took me by surprise (the reaction, that is).
