There is an article in Physics Today on more precise re-definitions by the CGPM in the 2010-2011 time frame. The two contenders for a new definition of the kilogram are (a) linkage to the Avogadro Constant by the counting of atoms in a sphere of silicon, and (b) linkage to results from the Watt Balance of electrical and mechanical powers.
