Event Announcement:

NIST World Metrology Day

May 21, 2007

Measurements for the Environment and Climate Monitoring

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Red Auditorium

NIST will hold its inaugural celebration of World Metrology Day on Monday,
May 21, 2007. The Metre Convention was signed on 20 May 1875, a date now
celebrated as World Metrology Day. The Convention created the International
Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and set the framework for global
collaboration in the science of measurement and its industrial, commercial
and societal application. The original aim of the Metre Convention - the
worldwide uniformity of measurement - remains as important today, in 2007,
as it was in 1875.

Join us in celebrating World Metrology Day- a celebration of our core
foundation and purpose!

The theme for 2007 is Measurements in our Environment. NIST research and
measurements provide a significant foundation for measurements made in our
environment. Come to hear about NIST efforts related to this year's theme
and stay for refreshments.

Speakers will include:

. Measurements for the Environment and Climate Monitoring,
Introduction by Katharine Gebbie (PL)

. Climate Research: A Challenge for Metrology, Jerry Fraser (PL)

. Measurements and Standards to Characterize the Atmospheric Column,
Pam Chu (CSTL)

. Measurements and Methods to Remove Barriers facing the Photovoltaic
Industry, Hunter Fanney (BFRL)

. Concluding remarks by Willie May (CSTL)

Resources from the NIST Research Library will be on display and the speaker
session will conclude with refreshments outside the Red Auditorium.
